Finding a Concrete Contractor

Article By Jennifer Weldon

With the arrival of summertime and more families spending increasing amounts of time entertaining and socializing at home, backyard gathering areas are becoming a popular home renovation. A big element to any backyard entertaining area is concrete. Concrete makes up patios, walkways, pool areas, and more. Finding the right concrete contractor can make the difference between an average backyard and one that will impress you and your guests.

Where to find one?
Many homeowners turn to their friends, neighbors, and family members when trying to find a concrete contractor. If they have had recent concrete work done and are satisfied with the results this may be a good place to start your search. Home remodeling magazines also will carry advertisements from local contractors, as will an internet search.

Needs
Before contacting any concrete contractors you should know what type of work you need done. Are you making repairs to a driveway, installing a walkway, or creating a backyard sanctuary? The size and scope of the work can make a difference as to what contractor you use. For instance, if you are envisioning a broad backyard stamped concrete patio with various walkways you will want a contractor experienced in this type of project.

Interview
You should interview prospective concrete contractors at your home. You can outline the work you want performed and seek input from the contractor. A skilled and experienced concrete contractor will most likely have suggestions on layout, materials and more. Be sure to ask them if they will be onsite overseeing your project or have a superintendent. Do they have employees or are they using day laborers? How long has their company been in business? What is their work schedule and the time frame estimated to complete the job? Also, inquire as to where excess concrete and concrete wash-out areas will be located. Throughout the process of the interview, your expectations should be met and you should gain a sense if the contractor is reputable and knowledgeable.

References
While the concrete contractor may come with a portfolio of pictures from past projects, be sure to also ask for references from homeowners, complete with addresses and phone numbers. You can contact these homeowners and even ask to stop by and view the work. Most homeowners will be quick to tell you if they were satisfied or not with the contractor.

Cost
Don't be afraid to discuss fees at the interview. The concrete contractor may charge by the hour, by square foot of material plus labor, or a flat fee per project. You will need any estimates in writing detailing what is being provided for that cost.

Once you settle upon a concrete contractor that you are comfortable with and trust, you can start your renovation project without added worries. Plus, you will always have a professional to contact for any repair work down the road and for all your concrete needs.
