Getting Tax Credit for Your New Doors and Windows

By Alicia Rowe

Right now is the perfect time for all of those home improvement projects that have been on your mind. The recent economic stimulus package (the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) has tax credits specifically to encourage homeowners to make energy efficient improvements to their homes. Replacing your drafty old windows and doors with new energy efficient models qualifies you for this credit. Curious about qualifying? Read on to find out more about this incentive!

How do I qualify?
The process is simple. Replace your old doors and windows with new, qualifying models between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010! Qualifying products include:

• Lo?2-272®

• Lo?2-366®

• Impact products

• Tripane glass

• Other specialty glass and storm doors

Save your receipts and the NFRC/Energy Star labels from the windows and doors, and print and file the Manufacturer's Certification Statement.

Tell me more about the tax credit!
The tax credit it worth 30% (up to $1,500) of the purchase cost of the doors and windows at your principal residence only. It's ok if you use non-qualifying materials in the project, but you will not receive a tax credit for them. Your project must be completed by the due date. If you complete several projects during the qualifying time period, you may submit all of them, but you will only get a maximum of $1500 total credit.

This tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction that you can either subtract from your taxes owed, or add to your tax refund. This is an excellent way to recoup some of your costs for this project. Don't wait until it's too late, start this project now to qualify for this excellent incentive!

Which Doors are Best for Your Home

By Jennifer Weldon

If you are replacing the doors in your home, you may be a little overwhelmed as to the choices on the market today. By looking at each product and the advantages and disadvantages of each, you will better understand what door selection is best for your home.

Wood
There is nothing quite like the timeless and breathtaking beauty of a wood door. If you are considering replacing your exterior doors with solid wood doors, know that you will be at the higher end of the price scale. The variety of woods, stains, and styles are limitless and will enhance your home's interior and exterior. Wood doors will need regular maintenance to prevent wood rot, water damage, and moisture problems. A professional door contractor can ensure your new wood door is properly installed to help prevent these problems.

Fiberglass
Fiberglass doors can mimic the look of wood doors with less maintenance. Fiberglass doors are more durable than wood doors and are resistant to warping or bowing. However, their finish can be comprised if the proper cleaning and waxing is not kept up with on a consistent basis. In this case, refinishing fiberglass doors may be necessary. A professional door contractor will show you the proper maintenance instructions to be performed once the door is installed.

Aluminum
Aluminum doors are another low maintenance option for replacing your exterior doors. Aluminum doors are also not prone to water or moisture damage and are virtually rust-free. Aluminum doors come in many different colors and the paint is typically baked on. One disadvantage to aluminum doors is that they can dent easily.

Steel
While steel doors are perceived as being stronger than wood or aluminum doors, in reality they usually are not. Steel doors can be finished with a vinyl coating or a baked on finish to achieve a variety of looks and colors. If the exterior door is in direct sunlight, a steel door is not recommended as the heat can cause bowing of the door and cracking of the paint.

Remodeled doors
If you have a tight budget, you may consider remodeling your current doors. A professional door remodeling contractor can perform the renovation work on your current doors onsite. They can replace the glass and seals, re-stain or repaint the door, and completely change the look of your door. This will save you about half the cost of replacing your current door, but keep in mind this can only be done if the door itself is structurally sound. Remodeling your doors is a good solution if you are just seeking a new look.

Depending on your needs and lifestyle, you have a variety of door materials and styles to choose from when replacing or remodeling your exterior doors. A professional contractor can help you evaluate the pluses and minuses of each, as well as what would be best suited for your home and budget.
