Electrical work is commonly needed with many renovation or remodeling projects. Electricity is run to a meter located on the outside of your home. The power from this meter is connected to a breaker box (usually located in your garage or basement) by an electrician, who then runs each breaker to a specified spot. Breakers should be labeled by room or appliance that is being provided power. When "tripped" the breaker shuts the power off to its designated area. It is extremely important that electricity is turned off in areas where renovation will occur, as serious injuries and even death can occur. A licensed electrician performing all wiring work can prevent injury and ensure electrical equipment in properly installed. They can also be invaluable during the planning process, as they can show you where power will come from and where it will need to be connected, they can also help determine the proper placement for switches.

Why Regular Electrical Checks are Crucial

By Jennifer Weldon

When homeowners think of regular home maintenance, chores such as caulking, sealing, spring cleaning, and paint touch-up generally come to mind. An often overlooked maintenance item is performing an electrical check on your home. A regular electrical check is vital to the safety of your home and your family.

Dangers
There is nothing quite as dangerous as electricity in your home. While proper safety procedures were used during installation, it is imperative that you keep constant checks in place to ensure safety over the months and years while living in your home. Faulty or frayed wiring, damaged wire insulation, and other wiring issues can cause sparking and lead to a house fire. Overloaded circuits or outlets can contribute to electrocution and even death. Because of these safety hazards regular electrical checks are crucial.

Adequacy
If your home is over 20 years old, the original wiring may not be adequate for the electrical needs you have today. After all, 20 years ago most families only had one television and home computers and other electronics were not common or didn’t even exist. Our electrical needs have changed over the years, and your home may not be wired to meet them. Also, if you have added onto your home or significantly remodeled portions of your home your electrical wiring needs may have changed. You should have a licensed, professional electrical contractor perform a check on your electrical system. They can run a load test to ensure that the circuitry and wiring can handle the electrical needs of your home.

Warning signs
Not all electrical problems will give you advance warning. Sparks and fires can often start hidden behind your walls and you will not know until it is too late. There are warning signs you can look for however, that may signal your electrical system is over capacitated. If your lights flicker or dim when another electrical appliance or light is turned on, the circuit they are on may be overloaded. If you have frequent circuit breaker trips or fuses blown, there may be a problem. Yellowing of electrical outlets can indicate the outlet gets too hot when in use. If you have experienced any of these warning signs, contact a professional licensed electrical contractor immediately.

Steps to take
There are a few steps you can take to help prevent problems with your electrical system, in addition to performing regular electrical checks. A main source of problems can be when homeowners do not use the correct wattage bulbs in light fixtures, lamps, and appliances. Please keep in mind that these wattages are not "recommended" wattages, but the wattages that are the safest for that light fixture or appliance. Adhering to these guidelines will help prevent electrical problems. Another source of concern would be if you find yourself using multiple extension cords and outlet expanders. If you are using too many of these on the same circuit, you may be overloading that circuit. A wise move would be to have a professional licensed electrician re-wire your home to fit your electrical needs in a safe fashion.

Electrical check
Having a licensed professional electrician perform regular electrical checks on your home can help identify any problems early and correct them before a major disaster can occur. These checks need to be done on a regular and consistent basis because of the changing demands we put on our electrical systems today. You may not realize how the new technologies you are bringing home to help make your life easier are impacting the electrical system in your home. A regular electrical check can evaluate your changing needs and a licensed electrician can perform any electrical upgrades you need.
