What are Environmental/Disaster Services for Homeowners?

By Jennifer Weldon

Disaster and Environmental Services for Homeowners

At one point or another, many homeowners will find themselves in need of an environmental/ disaster services contractor. An experienced, professional contractor will be able to safely remove the hazard or disaster, enact the proper clean up measures, and perform any repair work as needed. For those homeowners unfamiliar with environmental/disaster services here are some basic details:

Work performed
An environmental disaster service contractor can perform a variety of clean up tasks, all of them relating to the removal of hazardous materials. If your home was built in the 1970's or earlier, there is a chance asbestos or lead based paint was used in the construction. Both of these materials pose health risks and should be safely removed. Household disasters can also occur that necessitate the calling on of an environmental/disaster service contractor. Mold and mildew build up due to faulty plumbing or other water intrusions are becoming more common, which also pose health dangers. A plumbing or sewer back up can spill toxic sewage into a home and will need to be safely cleaned up. Any or all of these occurrences are more common than a homeowner may realize.

Removal
The main job of an environmental/disaster service contractor is to make a home habitable again. This requires them to safely remove any and all hazardous materials. They must also properly dispose of these dangerous items off site, in accordance with all local, state, or federal government guidelines. The contractor must eliminate the hazard, decontaminate all surfaces in the home, properly filter the air, and perform any repairs as needed. An environmental/disaster contractor will have the proper equipment to perform this cleansing and decontamination, including HEPA vacuums, air filtration devices, negative air machines, and the proper cleaners. Just as important, their laborers are well versed in the proper safety measures they must undertake to ensure their health and safety while performing the job. Most environmental/disaster service contractors are EPA and OSHA certified.

Offsite cleanup
The clean up of an environmental/ disaster hazard may actually occur in two main portions. The first step a contractor will undertake is removing all personal items and furniture from the contaminated areas. When these items are removed, they can now begin the hazardous materials removal and cleansing. Many times, the items that were removed are taken off site to be properly cleaned. The contractor typically will store these items for a homeowner in their warehouse until the home is safely cleaned and restored. At this point, the cleaned items will be placed back into the home.

Repair work
After the home is properly decontaminated and cleaned, there is often repair and restoration work to be done. Many environmental/disaster contractors have crews that specialize in these repairs which can include: plumbing, insulation, drywall, painting, flooring, electricity, and much more depending on the extent of the damage. An environmental/disaster contractor will ensure that all repairs will be done to the current building codes and regulations and that your home will look as good as or better than before!

If you are unfortunate enough to experience any problems with lead-based paint, asbestos, mold and mildew, sewage backups, or other environmental/disaster hazards, enlist the help of a reputable contractor experienced in this type of clean up and repair work. Their skills and knowledge can help you and your family overcome such a crisis.
