The Importance of Fans & Ventilation
By Jennifer Weldon
Proper ventilation and fans in your home is something that is often overlooked or taken for granted. The fact is that these two items play a much greater role than you may realize not only in the comfort and health of the air quality in your home, but other factors as well.
Air Quality
Ventilation is vital to promoting healthy air quality throughout your home. Your ventilation system constantly recycles the air. It filters our dust, dirt, air contaminants and pollutants and mixes it with fresh, clean air which is then re-circulated throughout your home. Without an efficient ventilation system the air in your home that you and your family breathe will be much lower quality and contain pollen, dirt and other dust. If you or a family member suffers from asthma or allergies, the negative effects would be even greater. In addition, if you cook with gas appliances in your kitchen, the noxious and toxic fumes need to be ventilated to the outside for the health and safety of your family and pets.
Moisture Control
Fans and ventilation systems play an important role in moisture control in your home. Without proper moisture control the air in your home will harbor too many moisture particles. This can not only lead to health problems for those breathing it in, but it can promote mold and mildew growth within a home. Many varieties of mold and mildew can be toxic to people and pets. Along with these safety hazards, clean up of mold and mildew is very time and cost intensive. You should always use the bathroom fans when using the tub or shower to eliminate excess moisture from the air. Bathrooms are a particularly popular breeding ground for mold and mildew. Too much moisture can also lead to wood rot, furniture and upholstery damage, and many more problems.
Utility Bills
The proper ventilation system and use of fans can help reduce your utility bills year round. Using an automatic attic fan to help cool the attic in the summer will reduce the workload on your air conditioning system to cool the rest of your home, thereby lowering your electricity costs. An efficient ventilation system will circulate consistent air temperatures throughout the home and help the system run more evenly and less often, also lowering your utility bills. Using ceiling fans when you are in a room will create a cooling effect on your and your family members. You may be able to keep the thermostat set a bit higher in the summer in this way. Likewise, in the winter running ceiling fans in reverse will help push the warm air that has risen to the ceiling back down to the living area, making it feel warmer.
Checking your system
A licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor can perform a check on your system to ensure the ventilation in your home is up to par. They will test your ductwork to ensure there are no leaks. They will evaluate the temperatures in various rooms of your home to ensure you are getting consistent temperatures throughout the home. They can also test the air quality in your home to see if improvements are needed. If any of these tests return results that are less than desired, you can have the proper work performed to get your fans and ventilation system running more efficiently, which will in turn save you money in the long run.
