Choosing your new floor covering is a large part of any renovation project. You will need to consider not only color, but texture and material. Hardwoods are a popular flooring choice, especially in dining rooms, living rooms, and foyers. Many combinations of stains and woods are available for you to choose from, but these options can be pricey. A wallet-friendly alternative that can give you the same look and durability you want is engineered hardwoods. These are prefinished and install by locking together, making them less time and labor intensive than the traditional process of sanding, staining, and varnishing hardwood. Laminate (wood veneer on plywood backing) can also give you the look and benefits of hardwood at a more economical price. These interlocking panels are also known as a floating floor. Laminate can be bought to give the appearance of wood, tile, stone, brick, and other materials. In the kitchen and bathroom, ceramic tile is popular due to its water resistance and easy maintenance. Vinyl is the budget-friendly alternative to tile, offering the same low maintenance and look of tile with a lower price tag. Carpet will always remain a favorite for bedrooms and other rooms needing a softer, warmer feel. Its sound-absorbing qualities also make it good for areas where quiet is needed. Professional contractors can assist you with choosing the flooring that will best fit your needs, and ensure that it is properly installed.

"Green" Flooring

Text by Dierdra Doran

Up until fairly recently, homeowners didn't have a lot of choice about materials or style in flooring. But now flooring products offer a wide variety of attractive and durable products like engineered wood, cork, bamboo and tile. Anything is possible with flooring today.

The best choice in earth-friendly flooring is to refurbish those wonderful wooden floors that have withstood the test of time and use, and are sometimes hidden beneath old linoleum, carpeting, or vinyl floors. The classic look of simple pine planks or hardwood can be revived by refinishing the flooring and removing the signs of wear and tear. It's not that hard to restore the original polished sheen to this flooring. People are even reusing old barn boards for flooring or wood from logs that have been underwater for decades

Other wood flooring products are eco-friendly as well. Cork flooring is an innovative and attractive choice that is environmentally sound. Cork is harvested from trees without killing them. Bamboo flooring is another sustainable material, since bamboo is a grass that matures in three years. Available in strips, planks or tile, bamboo flooring can be installed like any laminate flooring product. Another option is engineered hardwood flooring, which has a thin wood veneer skin on top, with other thin wood layers glued underneath to form a very solid and long-lasting flooring.

Ceramic tile flooring is an ancient material that never goes out of style. There is an enormous versatility in glazes, sizes and designs, and it's still affordable. Kitchen and bathroom remodeling that includes tile can use up to 24" square tiles, where 12" square used to be the norm. There are tools to facilitate the installation for do-it-yourself projects, such as mounted frame-plates that eliminate the need for adhesives. Ceramic tile is definitely an earth-friendly choice for flooring

A surprising material in the sustainable flooring material category is linoleum. Because of its derivation from linseed oil, it doesn't have the same toxicity as other man-made products, has a natural jute backing, and it can be recycled. It offers a great variety of colors and designs, and last for a very long time.

So "reuse, reduce and recycle" can be applied to your choices in flooring materials, whether it's refinished wood, bamboo, cork, engineered wood, or ceramic tile. There's no limit to the possibilities in making your flooring stylish and sustainable.
