Updating Your Kitchen through Renovation

By Alicia Rowe

Kitchen Remodeling

Today's kitchens are more than just a place to cook food. They're an eating space, computer area, or a socializing hub. Many older kitchens were designed when the wife stayed home and did all the cooking. Modern families make meal preparation a group activity. If you own an older home, it's quite possible that your kitchen may feel cramped or outgrown. If your kitchen layout is no longer accommodating to how you and your family use the kitchen, consider renovation. A remodel will not only make your kitchen more comfortable for your family, but it will add to the value of your home. There are a few considerations you should keep in mind whether you're doing a few small updates, or a total kitchen overhaul.

Picturing Your New Kitchen
Before any work can start on your kitchen, you must have clear plans for what you wish to achieve with this remodel. Get ideas from magazines, touring model homes, printing out images from websites, or talking with a kitchen contractor or designer.

Kitchen Update Remodeling

Think about the areas you need to improve in your kitchen, and ask yourself important questions focusing on these needs. Does it have enough room to comfortably accommodate everyone involved in meal preparation? Do you have any special needs, for example, cooking Kosher? Do you recycle, and if so would you like recycling bins in the kitchen? Do you need room for a computer for looking up recipes or for your kids to do homework? Is a desk area for household bills, mail, and other paperwork necessary? How big of a seating area do you need?

Once you have determined your needs, you can now get creative! Determine your wants, and what style you plan to use. These will have to be prioritized to budget and size constraints, but you may be surprised with the extra touches you can add to your new kitchen. Consult a professional contractor, as they will have the best insight for products to meet your needs, and will be able to get the best prices for you.

Planning the layout
Now that you have ideas of your needs and wants, you should begin designing the layout of your new kitchen. You may need to work within the existing layout if you do not plan on replacing all of your cabinets, but many additions and changes can be incorporated. Consider having a professional contractor help you with this step. Be sure to carefully consider the workspace between the fridge, stove, cook top, sink, and microwave. The flow of this area can be crucial to keeping a smooth flow during food preparation and cooking. Be sure to place seating areas and bars out of this general area, so the flow is not interrupted.

Adding Design and Style
Your new kitchen style should keep with the same general colors and decor found throughout the rest of your house. This will keep the transition from room to room smoother. Avoid severe color or design changes, as they can make it more difficult to sell your home. Your contractor will help you to pick the best options for your home out of all styles available on the market.

Planning Your Budget
Kitchen remodeling prices can range from a few thousand to upwards of sixty thousand dollars. Decide on a budget and stick with it for best results. Both small and large changes can be incorporated on almost any budget. Your contractor can assist you with finding areas where you can save money, and areas where you should spend a little more to make your money go farther. They can also help save on subcontractors and supplies.

Planning the Size of Your Kitchen
The recent trend has been towards larger and larger kitchens. If your kitchen is too cramped, you may be able to incorporate other usable areas nearby to expand your square footage. For example, a large pantry, mud room, or even hallway area may be added. Another option is using space from underutilized formal living or dining areas to create one large kitchen and dining room. If your home is limited on space, adding an addition may be the way to go. This will allow you to not only add space to your kitchen, but add extra rooms. Your contractor will be able to plan and lay out a design for this addition.

Kitchen remodeling can open up your kitchen and make it more pleasant to work in.

Choosing the right type of paint:
Choosing the right type of paint for your kitchen is as important as the color. Choosing a paint type that is easily soiled will lead to a lot of extra cleaning or to walls that rapidly become unappetizing in appearance.
One of the best types of kitchen paint is commonly referred to as "eggshell". Eggshell is a compromise between flat and satin or semi-gloss types of paint. It used to be that every kitchen and bathroom was painted with an oil-based gloss paint to resist moisture and grease splatters. The oil base paints are still available for the hardcore traditionalist, but today's polymer-enhanced latex (water-based) paints are very durable and make for easy cleaning of painting tools and equipment and the walls was the paint has dried. You can of course use semi-gloss or gloss latex paints however, they give a harsh appearance and look institutional. Whereas, eggshell looks nearly like a flat paint but with added durability and easier cleanup.

Best Kitchen Paint Colors:
The most popular kitchen colors are in the yellow and goldenrod colors schemes. These colors have several things going for them:

• Somewhat neutral and goes well with many decor themes

• Hides the discoloration that grease and cooking oil create

• Displeasing to flies and insects

Scientific research found that flies are attracted to light blues and repelled by yellows. I didn't know flies could distinguish colors, but evidently they can. Of course, not everyone is going to want a yellow or goldenrod kitchen and need to find other colors that compliment their style and decor. There are several things to consider before running out to your local paint or hardware store to get the paint.

• What is the ambiance you want to feel: Airy and bright, comfortable, close and cozy, or super clean and institutional?

• How big is the kitchen and how many windows are there. Do the windows allow a little or a lot of natural light into the room?

• What color(s) are the cabinets? Are they a natural wood color? Are they a light wood such as birch or pine, medium tones of oak or cherry, or darker such as mahogany or walnut?

• What type of flooring is there and what are the pre-dominate colors?

Lets take a look at the options based on the above four alternatives. Airy and bright lends itself to the light side of the color wheel with pastels, crèmes, beiges and off-whites. Cozy, close and comfortable work best on the dark side of the color wheel with browns, dark blues, purples and deep reds. Institutional colors are light grays, sea foam green and bright white. Of course, any of these can provide a completely different atmosphere based on the complimentary colors in the kitchen. For example, kitchen cabinets painted white with a subtle blue on the walls provides a warm and cozy country kitchen feel. Large kitchens, at least 15' x 15', can accommodate nearly any color scheme. If you go with darker colors, there should be plenty of light in the kitchen. Small kitchens should probably be painted in the lighter or neutral colors to keep the walls from closing in on you. However, if you like the claustrophobic feeling, by all means go with darker colors.

Darker wood cabinets can be greatly complimented by going with lighter and more neutral colors on the walls. Light colored cabinets tend to accommodate nearly any color except bright white. The critical thing to ask yourself is do I want the cabinets and walls to present a unified appearance or a contrasting one. Outdated and worn cabinets may look better in unified color scheme. You can always paint the cabinets, too. It doesn't matter as the flooring material as much as the flooring color. Dark floors definitely need to be highlighted with lighter colored walls. A floor in white, off-white, and light beiges can standout against darker walls.

A kitchen is a busy and essential part of a good home and it should reflect your personality and decorating tastes. The best paint colors for your kitchen are the ones that you enjoy and fit your personality and make the kitchen a central gathering place for friends and family.
