What Should I Look for in a Kitchen Contractor?
Free Estimates - No Obligation - Fast and Simple
A kitchen renovation project can seem like a headache-in-the-making to almost any
homeowner. Luckily, there are contractors that specialize in these projects to handle the details.
They can help you with every step of the way, from budgeting, to choosing materials, to
installation. Sounds great, right? But what criteria should you use when deciding on a
contractor?
Licensing
First and foremost, make sure that your contractor is licensed in your state. These licenses are
legally required! Checking with the state is the best way to confirm licensing information. Your
contractor will also have a business license. Check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see
if they have a history of complaints.
Experience
As with almost every profession, the more experience the better. Ask about potential contractor's
previous kitchen projects. You're looking for someone who specializes in kitchen renovations,
and while a contractor may have plenty of experience with other projects, they may have done
little in the way of kitchen remodeling. Choosing a kitchen specialist can lead to more accurate
budgeting and better overall quality.
Insurance
Contractors are not required to carry insurance, and many choose not to due to the cost.
However, this insurance protects both you and the contractor. Imagine the injuries possible in a
kitchen renovation. If the worst happens, and your contractor or one of their helpers is injured
while working on your property, this insurance will cover costs.
References
Most people are happy to give their opinion on the performance of someone they've hired. This
goes for contractors as well. Ask for references, and be sure to actually contact each one. Find
out how satisfied each client was with the quality of work and timeliness of the contractor. Also
ask how the contractor dealt with any problems that arose in the kitchen remodeling project.
The key to finding the best contractor for you is research. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
A licensed and insured contractor with strong work history and references will be your best bet
for a fantastic new kitchen.
