Storage SolutionsFree Estimates - No Obligation - Fast and Simple It seems one can never have enough storage space. This lack of storage space leads to cluttered spaces and makes your home look messy. Some homeowners go to extremes trying to find appropriate storage. They will hire professional organizers to build elaborate storage systems, rent a self storage facility unit at a monthly fee, or even consider moving into a larger home. Storage solutions, however, do not have to come with a hefty price tag. If you have a garage or a basement, you can build a storage shelving unit at little cost. If you build a storage closet with a 12” wide shelf along an entire wall, you can easily gain up to 80 cubic feet of storage shelving space. Add an additional 6” for 18” total shelving space and you maximized your storage shelving to 120 cubic feet. This storage shelving closet can be used for clothes, holiday decorations, sporting good equipment, and more. In lieu of a storage closet, you can use metal storage shelving in this same space to store tools, supplies, and lawn equipment. Storage solutions can also include wall storage. A creative storage seeker will find indentations or alcoves in walls and create storage spaces or closets. You may have excess space under a stairwell, or in a dormer. This can easily be converted to finished storage space with a door hidden in the indentation. To maximize the storage closet, install a storage organizer with various compartments. This will allow more items to be stowed and make it easier to find these items when you need them. Heating systems can also create storage problems, particularly in northern climates where households may rely on wood stoves. The wood for fuel needs to be stored for the entire season. Sometimes this is done by simply stacking it outside and covering it with a tarp. This is not a good storage solution as it will require many trips back and forth to the wood pile and the wood will still have to dry out when it is brought inside. A better storage solution is a wood storage area that houses a wood storage bin. The wood will keep dry this way. An outdoor chute makes loading the bin easy. An added benefit would be if the household converts to a pellet stove in the future, the bin can then store pellets instead of wood. Many people tend to only look at wall or floor space when creating a storage solution. However, do not overlook the ceiling. If you have high ceilings in your garage, the ceiling space can be converted with a loft area accessible via a ladder. This will create another garage “floor” with which to store items. If your ceilings are not high, you can still utilize the area by installing metal hooks and storing items such as ladders and bicycles. Metal hooks can also be used on the garage walls to store hoses and other lawn equipment. by Jennifer Weldon |
